Reducing carbon emissions across the public sector will be key to Scotland’s future not only for economic reasons but to meet climate change and Carbon Reduction Commitment (CRC) targets. Whilst there have been many discussions on sustainability and the impetus for organisations to have a low carbon footprint, there is little consensus regarding good practice for ‘greening’ an organisation’s standard operating and support procedures. This conference will equip delegates with the information they need to make their services and technologies more sustainable, efficient and cost effective.
The UK Government Cabinet Office’s Greening Government ICT strategy outlines the targets, and methods for meeting them, in order to create a more sustainable use of information and communication technologies within government. Government is the largest purchaser of Britain’s ICT which is a major user of energy and natural resources. It is therefore essential that the systems that are in place to improve the lives of millions of people do so without negative impacts on the environment.
The need for central government innovation in this area is likely to indicate that requirements for local government to do the same are not far behind. This conference is therefore for those across the public sector who want to understand the efficiencies that ‘green’ services and technologies can deliver; both environmentally and economically.
This conference will examine the barriers that prevent organisations from ‘greening’ their services including; sustainable supply chains and how to create them, funding of ‘green’ improvements with reduced budgets and how to procure such improvements sustainably. Innovative and affordable examples of sustainable implementation of services and technologies will also be explored at this event.
